Week 2 Lesson Activities: Nick Vujicic review

Fletcher Dean's five components of effective speech writing are:
  1. Focus on the audience
  2. Use anecdotes to engage the audience
  3. Give your speech structure
  4. Don't over rely on powerpoint, and
  5. Edit so your speech is simple and clear.
As seen in the clip above, motivational speaker Nick Vujicic applies these to the speech he is presenting to an auditorium full of high school students.

Nick keeps his focus on his audience by being mindful of the average age of the people he is speaking to. As his audience is primarily school students, Nick keeps his speech, fast paced and active to keep hold of their attention.

He opens his speech with anecdotes. The stories he chooses, about people responding to his appearance, work both to engage the audience and make them feel comfortable. Nick makes it obvious that he is comfortable and happy in himself and that helps to make the audience feel comfortable as well as increasing their engagement.

Nick uses no powerpoint at all in his presentation, he relies only on himself and audience participation.

Although the focus of the speech isn't exactly clear as this is only part one, it is obvious that Nick Vujicic is an excellent and effective speech writer and presenter.
